The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body that begins in the lower back and runs through the buttocks and down the legs. This nerve supplies sensation to the lower leg and skin of the foot and innervates muscles as well. Sometimes, this nerve is pinched by a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and other abnormalities which will result in severe pain and a condition known as sciatica.
Sciatica manifests by sharp leg pain, weakness and numbness in the lower back and leg that can seriously affect your mobility. The pain worsens overnight and may be the reasons for your insomnia. The condition is usually treated with painkillers, but you should know that there are a few simple exercises which will make the pain go away in just a short time. Here are a couple of these exercises:
Lie down on your back on the floor and bend the painful leg, then pull it towards your shoulder and keep the position for 30 seconds when you feel the stretch. Straighten your leg and take a break afterwards, then repeat the process a few more times.
Lie down on the floor and bend your knees, then pull them toward your chest but keep your buttocks on the floor. Cross the legs next and pull the healthy leg with your hand, then keep the position for 30 seconds and go back to the original position. Repeat the exercise 2 times.
These powerful exercises will boost your circulation and activate your muscles, effectively reducing the pain.
